Borrowing the popular ‘First Friday’ art night idea from the US, The Office is showcasing a new artist(s) work in the space every month, with a large gallery opening on the first Friday of each month. Pieces are for sale and will remain in the space for the whole month. Essentially, our aim is get people together to have a good time and appreciate art and creativity (and maybe even purchase some of their own!)

The first of many ‘First Fridays’  featured our own Guillaume Sardin, an architect and designer, as well as a member who is intricately involved in the interior design of our space. A perfect candidate for our first exhibition.

Guillaume exhibited his Rwanda Heraldry project and his Kubaka furniture line. Rwandan Heraldry is a series of symbols that represent the districts, sectors, cells, and other administrative departments of Rwanda. Similar to a coat of arms, Guillaume designs his symbols by studying the history and folklore of each region, analyzing the etymology of the Kinyarwanda names, and drawing from traditional patterns.

His ‘Kubaka’ furniture line, made from African hardwoods, was inspired by local scaffolding techniques. The lamps, tables, and desks prop neatly against walls and have a clean and modern look.

Not only art, Guillaume was publicizing his “Learning From Kigali” campaign. Great art and a great cause!

Despite the panic to get ready, some last minute arrangements, and ominous rain clouds,  it all came together beautifully, and with only a few casualties (three of Guillaume’s fingers, to be exact). After months of construction work, new walls, and paint jobs, I was impressed at how beautiful our Office looked, and how stunning Guillaume’s work looked in the space. Much wine was consumed, and much fun had by all.

In case you missed it, Guillaume’s work is on display all May at The Office. Any orders or inquiries can be made to him through email: guillaume@georgepericles.com

Make sure to join us next month, June 7th, for out next First Friday!

Also, we’re famous!
